Home | Information | What is The Bay, Filey?

History

The Bay is a purpose-built holiday village on the clifftops to the south of Filey seaside resort.

It is built on the site of the old “Butlins” which some of our more mature guests remember from their childhoods!

The building work started in 2007, and some of our owners were the first to buy back then! The first properties were apartments and cottages. Then the first beach houses were built around 2012, and the site was expanded further in 2021 to include the new Meadows development.

Altogether there are around 500 properties, all holiday homes, many of which are rented out by the owners.

Amenities

The developers paid great attention to the look and feel of The Bay, including boules courts, courtyards, grassed areas all around the development to make it a lovely setting. Gardens are not enclosed partly to make it easier for our gardeners but also makes it a lovely communal holiday village.

They also created a village centre (which isn’t really in the centre as you’ll see from the map below as the site is quite long and thin) but in this centre, you will find a 20 metre pool with baby splash pool, poolside sauna and steam room. There’s also a fitness suite and a beauty room where you can book treatments. The John Paul Jones pub serves food and drink all day, with inside and outside seating. In the internal courtyard you will also find an arcade, also known as the Family Entertainment Centre, a shop selling groceries, household items, alcohol, beach items, souvenirs, and more. There’s a pharmacy there too for your medical needs. The tennis court next to the leisure centre entrance is also bookable, and behind the nearby beach houses, there’s an adventure playground suitable for children under 12 years of age.

The great thing about the Bay is that all guests booked with us can enjoy the pool and gym for free, and book on organised activities too for a small charge. Currently activities include a tie-dye workshop, ready steady teddy (“build a bear”), archery, laser clay pigeon shooting.

The Wildflower Meadows is great for walking the dog, or enjoying a picnic or a game of football on the pitch there.

Another benefit of the Bay is that you can walk to the beach, about a 10-15 min walk away. There is the old existing path down through Primrose Valley (follow the signs on Silversands Way) and a new coastal path which takes you to the car park at Hunmanby Gap where there’s a popular cafe known as The Beach Cafe.

The Bay are constantly adding to amenities, and some EV charging points are coming soon! Watch this space.

They are also changing the sleeper paths and driveways to block-paving, which is long overdue (they are very slippy when wet and I have had a fall and a few near slips myself!) so whilst this will cause some disruption, it will be much safer once finished in 2023.

If you are hoping for a hot tub, then sorry, it’s against the site rules for us to have them!

Property types

The Bay is a mix of property types, so that anyone from a solo traveller up to a large family gathering can enjoy what the Bay has to offer.

The smallest properties are the 1 bedroom apartments. These are in small blocks with a communal entrance with intercom system, and apartments are either ground floor (with or without a patio) and first floor. We have one of these – Perran Apartment which is ground floor with a patio.

The next size are 2 bedroom apartments. Again, these are in small blocks with a communal entrance with intercom system, and either ground floor or first floor. We have one of these – Sea Air apartment which is first floor with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

Then there are cottages which have 2, 3, or 4 bedrooms.

And finally 2 or 3 bedroom beach houses or meadow lodges.
